We buy in bulk, compost on the balcony, and the whole thing holds together because the shops are five minutes away. Moving to Thailand for half the year, I did not want to lose that, so I began reading listings differently.

Water storage first. Most houses have a tank, and its size tells you how the area is supplied.

Then the kitchen, whether there is room for jars and a proper worktop, because that is where the system lives or dies.

Then the walk to a fresh market rather than to a supermarket. Fifteen minutes on foot is my line.
